Rivets, Split Pins and Spring Pins

Rivets, pins, and studs are all types of fasteners used in various applications to join or secure two or more components together. Each of these fasteners has specific characteristics and applications:

  1. Rivets:
    • Definition: Rivets are permanent mechanical fasteners used to join or fasten materials together. They consist of a smooth, cylindrical shaft with a head on one end.
    • Application: Rivets are widely used in construction, automotive, aerospace, and other industries where a strong, permanent connection is required. They are especially useful in situations where welding or adhesive bonding may not be suitable.
    • Installation: Rivets are installed by inserting them into a pre-drilled hole and then deforming or “upsetting” the tail end (the end without the head) to create a second head, effectively locking the pieces together.
    • Types: Common types include solid rivets, blind rivets (pop rivets), and tubular rivets, each designed for specific applications.
  2. Split Pins (also known as Cotter Pins):
    • Definition: Split pins are bent metal pins with two tines on one end and a loop on the other. They are used to secure parts together temporarily and prevent them from coming apart.
    • Application: Split pins are commonly used in machinery, automotive, and other applications where components need to be aligned or fastened in a non-permanent manner.
    • Installation: The split pin is inserted through a hole (such as a castle nut on a wheel axle), and then the tines are bent apart to lock it in place.
    • Varieties: There are different types of split pins, including straight, extended prong, and hairpin styles, each designed for specific purposes.

Choosing the appropriate fastener depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as load-bearing capacity, permanence of the joint, and ease of disassembly (if needed). Additionally, considering the material and size of the components being fastened is crucial for proper selection and installation.
